New blog design and connect options

This post is for all the people reading my blog via your favorite RSS reader. I’ve made some design changes. No, that doesn’t change the RSS link, which remains the same: http://feeds.feedburner.com/dvirreznik.

Couple of things have changed, but before addressing them, I’d like to thank @ronenk for his professional advice – thanks man! Now, the changes:

  • New design template, clearer, whiter, which in my opinion is easier to read. I hope you like it.
  • Navigation has been moved to the left, a task long over-due, I know. Living in Israel I have this weakness for Hebrew, that is written from Right-to-Left. So obviously my blog, although in English, needed to adhere to Israeli rules. Over the time I realized that it’s just wrong. So I switched sides.
  • Connect with Dvir isn’t a new widget, but it couldn’t hurt mentioning it again. I’ve listed my social identities, in no special order, including my email address. Feel free to contact me in any of those methods.
  • Text size. Analyzing my traffic I noticed that a growing # of requests are coming from mobile devices/browsers, and the normal text size can be too small. So now there are 3 text sizes for you to choose from.
  • Google Friend Connect and MyBlogLog widgets offer you a great way of getting to know new people who share the same interest. Feel free to join my networks.
  • Google Reader Shared Items. I’m a big fan of GReader, and although the various real-time services out there, I can always rely on Reader to keep me busy at nights/weekends and updated on the stuff I missed. In this widget you can see the recent items I’ve ‘Shared’ on my Reader – hope you’ll like them too.. 😉
  • Zemanta is a new discovery service I’ve added a month or so ago. Zemanta is actullay a double multi-platform solution, for blogs (wordpress, blogger, typepad, tumblr and others) and emails (Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo), bringing you relevant content from known publishers like mashable.com and techcrunch as well as other ‘smaller’ bloggers, like me. If you read a post you like, hit the ‘Reblog‘ button (site, not RSS) and share your thumbs-up with the community.

What I have in Firefox 3

Since upgrading to Firefox 3 some 10 days ago I’ve been trying to optimize its performance, both in UI (themes and extensions) and extensibility (plugins and extensions).

The installation went very smooth, the software remembered all my preferences, but I had some issues with daily usage: my ‘back’ button didn’t display the name of the site, some plugins were not suitable for FF3 and other extensions I wasn’t using that much. Some issues were answered by @firefox_help – excellent example of using micro-blogging to reach your audience. There are other examples here (Mashable) and here (Hebrew).

Niv Calderon asked me to share my extensions, as he did a while back. For the sake of saving real-estate space I decided to start with a blank page, un-install all my extensions and install only what I use on a daily basis.
There’s also a screenshot of my Search engines, what I’m using more frequently is at the top of course – web 2.0 related, either IBM internal or public – results are better coming from those sources.

So, this is how my Extensions window in Firefox looks like:
bluetwitsidebar – an IBM extension that adds twitter to FF sidebar, and integrates with internal IBM micro-blogging tools, such as BeeHive.

Colorful Tabs – cute, adds some color to your browser

Ctrl-Tab – super extension with cool UI, F4 opens up a tab mosaic for easy access to open tabs

Delicious Bookmarks – add bookmarks and search your existing ones

Facebook toolbar – Share button is most important, as I share quite often. The rest are nice, but can live without them

Forecastfox – what should I wear tomorrow? short sleeves or short sleeves…

FoxClocks – when working with Europe and the US a lot, it’s a priceless extension

Foxear – another IBM extension, that adds Lotus Connections’ social bookmarking buttons (similar to del.icio.us, only internal)

Gmail Manager – easy way to see what’s up in my Gmail inbox, without keeping the tab open

Google Gears

Google Preview – adds a tiny preview to Google Search results

IBM Bluepages Plugin – another IBM internal extension, for our employee directory. Allows me to add people to my Lotus Notes 8 address book, IM list or personal group

IE Tab – for those ‘great’ websites that support standards

Minimap Addon – just installed it, haven’t use it much yet to form an opinion

PDF download – open or save a file, without freezing your tab/browser

Screen grab – copy or save full screen, visible portion or selection – brilliant

Tab Mix Plus – probably one of the best FF extensions ever. The FF3 extension is still in beta

Tommy! – another internal IBM extension, that aggregates employee directory, IM, blogs, bookmarks and communities – in one mini-view

Undo Closed Tabs Button – ever closed a tab by mistake? here’s the solution for restoring it

Web 2.0 Unified Search – not an actual extension, but more a search engine plugin, IBM internal, that looks up in every web 2.0 repository (blogs, communities, bookmarks, social networks, etc)

Who is This Person – highlight a name and search various people finder search engines

Sent from Lotus Notes 8.0.1 Hebrew Client

Started using the Hebrew client of Lotus Notes 8.0.1 this week, as a personal experiment on one hand and from a business stand-point on the other.
Even thou most organizations in Israel are using an English UI of their messaging client (Outlook or Notes), Hebrew is (and always will be) a preferred language in Israel. IBM has been investing heavily into bidi (Bi-directional) these past years – part of the ‘holy’ work my friend Dina Ben-Elissar was doing, at IBM Globalization Center in Israel.
Developing a client is Hebrew includes two major steps: First, language – Hebrew (and Arabic) are written from right to left; second, UI (user interface) – which means the client needs to be mirrored. As with any software product, there’s no 100% QA – that’s the nature of software, and some things can only be found from daily usage.

I hope my usage of Lotus Notes 8.0.1 will encourage other IBMers to follow my suit – it’s a very cool looking client !! (click here for a larger screen shot)

Lotus Connections 2.0 – now in Ivrit

Lotus Connections 2.0 was announced today, riding the hype around Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston, with some cool new features, a brand new Lotus Connections homepage at ibm.com and most important – Hebrew support.
The Hebrew version will be available for electronic download on July 11th, but you can see how the new homepage looks like (also featured on my slides from ‘I want a facebook thing. I think.‘).

There’s also a video posted on YouTube, showcasing the new features.

Lotus Notes 8.0.1 available in Hebrew

Lotus Notes 8.0.1 is now available in Hebrew.
Eligible customers can download the software from Passport Advantage.

You all know the solution, but still, some of the version’s latest features includes:

  • Deployment enhancements to Lotus Domino that enable administrators to free up time and focus on other areas.
  • A new mode for Lotus Domino Web Access optimized for bandwidth. It addresses the needs of users who are traveling or are constrained with dial-up connections.
  • Linked to other components of the Lotus portfolio including integration with IBM Lotus Quickr, IBM Lotus Connections, increased support for IBM Lotus Sametime® 8.0 (includes Lotus Sametime Unyte).
  • Greater extensibility through Lotus Notes Widgets.
  • Support for Citrix Presentation Server 4.5.
  • Database compression, which significantly reduces the storage size of Domino databases.
  • Domino 64-bit native support option for Microsoft® Windows 2003 and IBM AIX® platforms. 64 bit support enables Domino to address more memory on the server than is possible in previous versions.
