Yes, it’s true. ThePirateBay.com are thinking of buying Sealand, a former British Naval platform in the North Sea. In 1967, an Englishman settled on the Sealand platform, proclaimed it a state and started issuing passports and his own money.
I read about it earlier this week on Cnet Blogma, and today even my Hebrew newspaper picked up the item, stating in 4 lines what the big deal is all about. Digg also has the story.
In case you haven’t been on the web for the past 3-5 years, Piratebay.org is one of the largest bittorrent sites in the world. You can find many-many wonderful things there, in premium quality, sorted quite intuitively. And it’s in even available in Hebrew!! The Mesiach (or Jesus, depending when is your weekend) has come.
But why is that important? Well, I’m sure you know that downloading copy-protected content isn’t exactly legal, depending where you live. And some sites, like isohunt.com which I use, was shutdown abruptly this week, since the ISP providing hosting services for isohunt.com was prosecuted by MPAA in their home country.
So, in buying Sealand (which is for sale, by the son of the Englishman from 1967), Piratebay.com can do whatever they want. It’s their country, their laws. Very interesting.
This development is very interesting, and we’ll see what the next step would be.
