Obama leads to change in Israel politics as well

It seems that Barack Obama‘s victory echoes all the way to our little country of Israel.
Obama’s flawless use of the web has created many copycats, most of whom mimicked the L&F of US President Elect website. Even the NY Times picked up the story, first caught by a local blogger, who mentioned it to a friend, who blogged about it – and shortly after published at ‘traditional’ news sites.

There’s even a new word for it in Hebrew – ‘likebama‘ (free translation – dorbanot.com):
‘Someone attemping to be like US President Elect Barack Obama, to enjoy Obama’s popularity’.

IBM Israel receives PM Award

During his last visit to Israel, Andy Monshaw had an unexpected obligation – to join Meir Nissensohn, IBM Israel GM, to an official ceremony where IBM Israel was honored with the Prime Minister‘s Award for Economic Contribution.

IBM made three purchases in Israel this year, starting off with XIV in January ($350m), FilesX early April ($70m) and Diligent mid-April ($200m). IBM has been the first global corporations to open local offices in Israel, back in 1949. In 1972 Haifa Research Labs were opened, and grew to be the largest research facility of IBM outside the US – with over 1,000 researchers, working at three development labs (Storage, Software and Development).

Steve Mills: I compete with Microsoft everyday

Steve Mills, IBM SVP, Software Group, is responsible for the 33,000 software professionals working around the globe, in sales, development and services, cashing in $18B in revenues (2007) and accountable for 40% of IBM’s profit. It’s no secret that IBM and Microsoft compete in the messaging and collaboration space for some time, with both companies in it for the long run.

Last week during a visit to UAE, Steve outlined his views on the software business, IBM Software strategy, acquisitions and the competition of course.

I compete with Microsoft everyday, Mills says. That space is very competitive between the two companies. They’re endlessly attacking us. We’re endless attacking them and there is nothing more fun than to attack your competitor with ‘free’.
