Lotusphere 2009 Buzz

Lotusphere 2009 is starting in just under 12 hours, and the net is already buzzing with news about Lotus’ big event. There are couple of ways to stay on top of what’s going on in Orlando this week, too many ways in fact, so here are my fav 5 (10 actually):

Lotusphere meets SouthPark

In preparation for Lotus’ big week, IBM have been releasing some sneak-peaks and spoilers at what’s coming up at the 16th Annual Lotus Event. Here are some of them.
IBM offers sneak pick at Lotusphere 2009

IBM confirmed to vnunet.com that there will be four new product announcements at the event, and that new online collaboration services will be unveiled. IBM Lotus programme director Chris Reckling plans to demonstrate how new social software tools are needed to meet new communication challenges.

USAToday.com – More firms are switching from Microsoft Outlook to Lotus Notes

The increasing market share Lotus is enjoying, both through retaining existing clients and gaining significant numbers of new customers, suggests that IBM’s Lotus platform strategy is highly successful and sustainable.

More than half of Fortune Global 100 are using Lotus Notes and Domino

Over the past 15 months ending in the third quarter of 2008, more than 12,000 new organizations bought their first Notes/Domino licenses, and more than half of the Fortune global 100 now use Lotus Notes and Domino. This includes more than 80 percent of the largest banks, consumer product, electronics, insurance, pharmaceutical and telecommunications companies — as well as more than 50 percent of America’s largest 100 companies.

IBM acquires Outblaze – online messaging, collaboration service provider

The messaging service will become part of the IBM Lotus “Bluehouse” online social networking and collaboration project that’s currently in open beta, IBM said. The company is expected to disclose more details at next week’s Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Fla., about how the Outblaze assets will become part of IBM’s online portfolio.

First 48 hours with Lotus Notes Traveler

It’s been just over 48 hours since I started using Lotus Notes Traveler over my Nokia N95 and I have this to say – it’s addictive and I love it!! I’m using Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.0.0, with Lotus Mobile Connect for VPN to IBM network (which also gives me access to our intranet – cool ;-), and it has changed the way I work.

Now, some friends might say I’m a ‘connection-junky’ – must be online all the time, but they are blowing it out of proportions a bit. I do have fring, twibble, gmail, FB mobile, Lotus Sametime Mobile, Opera Mini and other mobile applications that keeps me connected – because it’s easier to access them when I want, where-ever I want. Also, I’m not connected all the time because my N95’s battery will die after 4 hours of usage..

I must say that the Lotus Notes Traveler setup is pretty easy, no technical knowledge required. Define your Domino server, how you connect to the network, what you want to sync (mail, calendar, contacts), always-on (push mail) or by-demand, and you’re set.

So, after downloading this cool Symbian screenshot application (thanks Yoav), I’ve taken some screenshots of what Lotus Notes Traveler can do. All those screenshots (and more as time progresses) are available at the facebook album.

Notes/Domino 8.5 announced at Macworld Expo

Some great coverage of IBM presence at Macworld Expo, courtesy of Ed Brill.
First, IBM announced the availability of Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5, which has been highly anticipated, including some great new features – both client and server side, and Mac support. You can also review the deck of ‘Introducing Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5‘ over at slideshare.
Head over to Ed’s post for more details on this important announcement.

Secondly, IBM also announced release 1.2.1 of Lotus Symphony, the open-office based productivity suite, available for free download at symphony.lotus.com.

Thirdly, great press coverage from the event.

Tech tip: where are my emoticons?

Got asked this yesterday by a colleague and it got me curious – where does Lotus Notes saves my 150+ smileys I use frequently in my instant messages? After a quick search, and a 5min chat with a colleague across the pond (another IM ROI), I found the answer.

First off, it depends which interface you’re using for IM: Lotus Notes or Lotus Sametime.
Secondly, the version is also important.

Most users are probably working like me, meaning the embed IM within my Notes client (see screenshot below). So, head over to C:notesdataworkspace.metadata.pluginscom.ibm.collaboration.realtime.palettespalettesSmileys and you’ll find them! It’s also convenient for copy-paste actions, as well as import/export.

I think this post worthies an article at developerWorks.. 😉
