What the F**K is Social Media. 1 Year Later.

Mornings are an excellent time to read, write and share. Shortly after the morning coffee and toast I head over to my GReader and start browsing the feeds, in a pre-defined order.
Ahuvah Berger recently joined the Blonde 2.0 team, which means we get to enjoy her super writing skills at least once a week (hopefully more dear.. ;-). After her last week’s post on Engaging the Masses comes this post, continuing where she left off, and linking to a wonderful deck at slideshare by Marta Kagan, What the F**K is Social Media. One Year After. In a long (83p) yet light presentation Marta goes over the basics of SM, adding some cool pictures and stats to back her points and strengthening her bottomline (p 53):
SO PLEASE, STOP F**KING AROUND AND GET SERIOUS ABOUT HARNESSING THE POWER OF THIS THING.

Slide 44 onwards highlights some business insights that are relevant to any company, like ‘93% of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media’ and ‘85% of social media users believe that a company should go further than just having a presence and actually interact with its customers’. Innovative approaches, I know..

The entire deck is hilarious (although the language might not appeal to everyone) and the 83 slides are going fast, but all convey an important message, and I only hope that a fraction of the 128,000 views this deck received were made by corporations and business executives and not just by us marketers – we’re already advocating this F**King thing too.. 😉

In preparation for Lotus’ big week, IBM have been releasing some sneak-peaks and spoilers at what’s coming up at the 16th Annual Lotus Event. Here are some of them.
IBM offers sneak pick at Lotusphere 2009

IBM confirmed to vnunet.com that there will be four new product announcements at the event, and that new online collaboration services will be unveiled. IBM Lotus programme director Chris Reckling plans to demonstrate how new social software tools are needed to meet new communication challenges.

USAToday.com – More firms are switching from Microsoft Outlook to Lotus Notes

The increasing market share Lotus is enjoying, both through retaining existing clients and gaining significant numbers of new customers, suggests that IBM’s Lotus platform strategy is highly successful and sustainable.

More than half of Fortune Global 100 are using Lotus Notes and Domino

Over the past 15 months ending in the third quarter of 2008, more than 12,000 new organizations bought their first Notes/Domino licenses, and more than half of the Fortune global 100 now use Lotus Notes and Domino. This includes more than 80 percent of the largest banks, consumer product, electronics, insurance, pharmaceutical and telecommunications companies — as well as more than 50 percent of America’s largest 100 companies.

IBM acquires Outblaze – online messaging, collaboration service provider

The messaging service will become part of the IBM Lotus “Bluehouse” online social networking and collaboration project that’s currently in open beta, IBM said. The company is expected to disclose more details at next week’s Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Fla., about how the Outblaze assets will become part of IBM’s online portfolio.

Twitter made us $1M

Yoav from Blink caught this VentureBeat story some days ago, and wrote a subsequent post (in Hebrew) titled ‘What’s in it for me?‘. In his post, Yoav talks about the thing that’s in the heart of any discussion about social media – ROI. From VentureBeat article:

Dell says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available the company’s Home Outlet Store. They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.

Yoav quotes Seth Godin by categorizing twitter more as a reach tool than a sales tool – a claim I totally agree with. Nevertheless, when we discuss about social media, monetization, business value – we cannot overlook the bottom line, which is money.

As a social media evangelist, I want more people and more companies on board, not because they have to but because there are results and value. Making $1M in revenues will certainly bring more people and businesses into the social media space – because they’ll see both the value and the return.
