First 48 hours with Lotus Notes Traveler

It’s been just over 48 hours since I started using Lotus Notes Traveler over my Nokia N95 and I have this to say – it’s addictive and I love it!! I’m using Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.0.0, with Lotus Mobile Connect for VPN to IBM network (which also gives me access to our intranet – cool ;-), and it has changed the way I work.

Now, some friends might say I’m a ‘connection-junky’ – must be online all the time, but they are blowing it out of proportions a bit. I do have fring, twibble, gmail, FB mobile, Lotus Sametime Mobile, Opera Mini and other mobile applications that keeps me connected – because it’s easier to access them when I want, where-ever I want. Also, I’m not connected all the time because my N95’s battery will die after 4 hours of usage..

I must say that the Lotus Notes Traveler setup is pretty easy, no technical knowledge required. Define your Domino server, how you connect to the network, what you want to sync (mail, calendar, contacts), always-on (push mail) or by-demand, and you’re set.

So, after downloading this cool Symbian screenshot application (thanks Yoav), I’ve taken some screenshots of what Lotus Notes Traveler can do. All those screenshots (and more as time progresses) are available at the facebook album.

Notes/Domino 8.5 announced at Macworld Expo

Some great coverage of IBM presence at Macworld Expo, courtesy of Ed Brill.
First, IBM announced the availability of Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5, which has been highly anticipated, including some great new features – both client and server side, and Mac support. You can also review the deck of ‘Introducing Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5‘ over at slideshare.
Head over to Ed’s post for more details on this important announcement.

Secondly, IBM also announced release 1.2.1 of Lotus Symphony, the open-office based productivity suite, available for free download at symphony.lotus.com.

Thirdly, great press coverage from the event.

Coming up this Sunday… – It’s HERE!

I need to sort out my time line, I know, but with the recent events and ongoing stuff at work you’ll understand and forgive this 24 hour delay. So, after promising something Sunday, then Tuesday, it has finally came, Wednesday, Dec 31st 2008.

Globes is the leading financial and IT publisher in Israel, issuing a monthly IT Magazine, by the exact name. IBM has bought some page space, 6 of them to be precise, dedicated entirely to Lotus Software. Excellent way to wrap up 2008!

Since IT Magazine doesn’t sport a website, I can’t send you links to the articles, but you can see them, scanned, at facebook. This is what you’ll find between the 6 page insert:

You can see and read the articles over at the facebook album.

Social media adoption – the IBM story

Last week I had the pleasure of talking to a group of college students from Canada, who came to Israel with Hillel Foundation of Toronto. They visited IBM for half a day, and we had a good discussion about social media and how IBM adopted it internally. As anyone, they were looking for the ROI, so I gave them examples of how social media at IBM helps me on a daily basis.
All of them were Gen Y of course, so at the first portion of my presentation (what is web/enterprise 2.0) I just hit ‘next’ all the time.. 😉

Since most participants knew what social media is, an interesting discussion started, of why it’s important and how such tools will benefit them – in the coming months. Some of the students were already part of the social media space, either working at VCs or other organizations aimed at helping SU companies in their early stages.

It was an excellent opportunity to share some of the work IBMers are doing using social media tools, for the past 5 years now! We have lots of social media tools (see slide above), some stay as research projects while others grow up and become IBM solutions (such as our social software solution – Lotus Connections).

The presentation from last week is available at my slideshare space.
Feel free to leave your comments and thoughts!

Coming up this Sunday… (updated)

Been working working hard this past month with our marketing and communications team on putting together something cool to end 2008, that would help strengthen the Lotus brand in Israel, and expose some of the great work our customers are doing with Lotus and WebSphere Portal solutions – should pop-up in the media…

I’ll have more to share with you coming Sunday Tuesday.
Sorry about the delay – holidays… 😉
