Nokia and IBM announce Lotus Notes Traveler for Symbian S60

IBM and Nokia will announce very soon that Lotus Notes Traveler will be available for Symbian S60 devices before the end of this year. Excellent news for our customers, who have been waiting patiently for a proven and secure messaging solution, suitable for Nokia devices, after the introduction of Lotus iNotes for the iPhone.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this release and put my Nokia N95 to the test…

Lotus Notes Traveler will have a plug-in for the standby screen on devices like the E71 and will also appear as part of the standard Nokia messaging client where you will see Lotus Notes Traveler in your list of email accounts.

Lotusphere 2009 Session Abstracts Published

The Lotusphere team has updated the website with full sessions’ abstracts. The lectures in each session are also available. Customers have been asking me about Lotusphere since Sep., wanting to know the details, planned announcements, parties, best practices session, workshops, etc. I’m told that registration is beyond expectation, already exceeding last year’s figures.. Hurry up and secure your spot at the largest Lotus and WebSphere Portal event.
See you all in Orlando, January 18th !

I know of at least one party, that will be celebrated throughout the US during Lotusphere…

Lotus Symphony Roadmap – OpenOffice.org Conference

China was the (other) center of attention this week, at the OpenOffice.org Conference in Beijing, where IBM committed to the future of ODF (Open Document Format) and presented a roadmap for Lotus Symphony, a free alternative for Microsoft Office suite (Word/Excel/PPT).

Earlier Nov. IBM released Symphony 1.2, which imporved the perfomance of the product, and also introduced a plugin library, specifically designed for Lotus Symphony. The next release of Symphony will be based on OO 3.0, that would allow for seamless operatibility for Office 2007 formats, and support Visual Basic macros. The latest release, 1.2, is also available for Mac OS (Beta), as well as Ubuntu Linux (Beta).

I’ve been using Lotus Symphony for several months now, and it does take some getting used to, but the features are quite the same, if you’re an average user, like me. If you’re a power user, you might miss some functionality, but there are ways to compensate for that.

The updated plugin library is a true asset, where the community shares its knowledge and expertise, with cool additions to the client. The one I liked the most is this cool one that allows you to export a presentation to a flash file (or .gif) – very nice !!

Nowadays it seems trivial, the internet. I am doing pretty much everything online, and if it’s not available online – chances are I will not look at it or consider any other action.
Been visiting a veteran Lotus Notes customer the other day, when I came across this poster, from one of IBM’s old campaigns, e-business.
Lou Gerstner, IBM CEO and President in the 1990s mentioned the term in his book, referring to IBM’s internet and marketing teams. Seeing this poster was like taking a time machine back to 1998… :-))

With all the different technologies and platform out there, it’s difficult to keep track of what and where everything is located. Whenever I read something of interest, that’s worth keeping, I have this flow of browser buttons, like a a process (hey, I work for Big Blue, we invented processes) – del.icio.us, dogear, twitter, facebook.

Ed has talked about the importance of collaboration within the Lotus Community, not only because Lotus strategy = collaboration, but also because it’s in our DNA – we’re here to share and spread the knowledge.

In the spirit of spreading the word, I tried to assemble a list of Lotus resources I use frequently – being formal websites with business and technical documents or social sites as blogs and wikis. If you have any additions, use the comments sections. I will definitely expand this post as time (and contributions) progresses.
