It matters

Watching this video over at Jon Burg’s blog made me realize I have something in common with the advertising professionals filmed – I too was laid off (wasn’t a surprise though) and it opened up new opportunities for me, not to mention that it made me start cooking, which I kinda love :-))

It’s not easy leaving a workplace you call home after 8 years, paving a new path in one of the toughest economical times the world has known. And still, much like the guys at Lemonade, I feel good about myself and the decisions I’ve made, knowing I’m doing something that matters for my future.

I hope Lemonade will find its way to Israel as well..

It’s getting close people, and sometimes I think that only when it truly happens will I understand (and absorb) it fully. In 7 days I’ll be un-employed.

I might have been in denial, at a subconscious level at least, but next Wed will be my last day at IBM, and with the local market conditions, the future is somewhat foggy. Israel has suffered a blow from the worldwide economic recession, but unlike the US, Russia and parts of Europe, our unemployment numbers are ‘relatively’ low, and expected to reach 7.5% 3Q09.

Job Search 2.0
I am using these 4 sites heavily: jobnet.co.il, jobmaster.co.il, Israemploy.net and LinkedIn in my daily searches for open positions. I’m also using facebook and twitter to market myself and my skills, and this blog as an online CV for potential head-hunters. Speaking of head-hunters, I met with 3 already, planning to meet 2 more after Pesach. Leaving an employer such as IBM at times like this might sound crazy to some people, but those who know me understand why. I know what I’m looking for in my next job and understand my fellow un-employees refusing to work at teenagers salary.

I know my next job is out there (already met it), just need to work hard to get it.. 😉

Social media ROI – IT4 Business Event

Tomorrow will be my last lecture as an IBMer, at the 2009 Israel Chamber of Information System Analysts, at Ramat Gan. Similar to last week’s lecture, I’ll be speaking about social media ROI’s, why should a company consider deploying social media solutions, present some customer references and wrap up with IBM’s own deployment story – all in 30min.. :-))

During the presentation I referred to Nielsen’s recent report (March 2009) Global Faces and Networked Places (PDF, 2.1MB), pointing out some of the facts about social media in 2008 and beyond. Definitely worth the read.
