Lotusphere, SWG Community Day and more

It’s hard to talk about anything these days other then Lotusphere happening right now in Orlando. Some of us (such as yours truly) couldn’t attend, but we have enough blogs/flickr/twitter/announcements to follow as it is. In my opinion that’s the true power of the web and collaboration for that matter – getting the feel of Lotusphere, the excitement, without actually being there in person. And I haven’t started talking about Lotusphere in Secondlife
Anyhow, things are happening other than Lotusphere which are worth mentioning, but I must link to a Lotusphere post I saw over at Rob Novak – Lotusphere 2008 Keynote Bingo (see above). Cool!

Now, to other news.
Software Group Community Day – Feb 18th 2008, Israel
Similar to the September 2007 event, the coming SWG Community Day (half-day actually) would provides a glimpse of IBM Software solutions: Information Management, Tivoli, WebSphere, Rational and Lotus (including WebSphere Portal). We’ll meet at Cinema City (again) at 3pm, 2.5 hours of professional sessions and then a movie (popcorn on us), The Kite Runner. The Lotus session will include 2 presentations: the first on a new dashboard software from IBM, SaaS (Software as a Service) based, called Sonata; the second is not final yet, but will focus on messaging and collaboration using mobile devices. Participation is free, but registration is required (phone only for now). Mark your calendars, Monday, Feb. 18th at 3pm.

Lotus sales up 7%; IBM revenue at $98.8B

IBM released its 4Q and full year results for 2007. You can tune in for Mark Loughridge remarks, SVP and CFO, over at Investor Relations website. A podcast is also available (24MB, mp3 format). Analyzing the Software business, we can see an increase across the board: Lotus sales in 4Q were up 7% compared to 2006, whereas the entire Software revenues in that period were up 12%, to $6.3B. IBM revenue in 4Q was $28.9B, up 10% Y/Y.

“IBM had a terrific fourth quarter and full year with record revenue, profit and cash. The broad scope of our global business — led by strong operational performance in Asia, Europe and emerging countries — as well as continued growth in services and software drove these outstanding results. As we begin 2008, IBM is well-positioned as a result of our global business reach, solid recurring revenue and profit streams, and strong financial position. We are on track to achieve our long-term earnings-per-share roadmap objective in 2010.” Samual J. Palmisano, IBM Chairman, President and CEO.

Obviously I can’t comment on my own country or region performance, other than saying we had a good year, both at Lotus and Software, landed some new customers, upgraded others. Our larger geography, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) was accountable for $10.8B in 4Q (+16%), and was the 2nd largest contributer to IBM’s full year results, with $34.7B (+14%).

You can read the complete press release at the site.

Lotusphere 2008 is 14 days ahead

Lotusphere 2008 is just around the corner, with 14 days left…
The 15th annual Lotus event will take place (again) in Orlando Florida, from January 20-24. You can find lots of information on the official site, at ibm.com/lotus/lotusphere. There are many sessions and lectures available, and I haven’t decided which ones I will attend, but I found just the DB to help me sort it out.

Genii Software built this cool DB of Lotusphere 2008 sessions, that covers all the sessions in the 5 days event. You can view lectures by title, speaker, company, session id, day/time, track/day/time and more. Opening a lecture lets you see what else is ‘playing’ at the same time, or what other lectures the location facilitates. Basically you can have a very good view of what’s available. There’s even a ‘tag cloud’ view…

I’ll be live-blogging from Lotusphere 2008, as I’m sure others will, so stay tuned for updates, pictures and announcements !!!

Last minute update – SWG Community Day

I’ve been thinking a lot this past few days, trying to figure out what to talk about tomorrow afternoon, at SWG Community Day (ibm.com/il/news/events/community).

Lotus customers have been very fortunate this past year, in which we held a user group every Q (in March, June and now this), and although we have some very exciting announcements to present, I know many of you have probably read them already, if not participated in some web casts that were available to BPs and customers.

I knew my presentation tomorrow should have 2 main topics: Lotus Strategy and Lotus Products. I just wasn’t sure how to frame them, how to open, what to focus on. Over the weekend I said you’re gonna hear how the (r)evolutions of Social Computing is changing the business landscape. That has changed. not entirely thou, allow me to explain: the presentation will still discuss about the same 2 main topics, just wrapped differently.

The (final) title (for now) is Lotus Strategy. You’ll still hear how the business landscape is changing our world, what factors are affecting our strategy, and what is Lotus Strategy. There will also be plenty of slides on the recent products we’ve announced this Q, and the UC2 demo of course. I’ve been reading some bloggers asking ‘where Notes/Domino is going?’. Aside from the excellent financial results Lotus is showing Q/Q and Y/Y, we have a very clear vision and a well planned roadmap for future releases. The recent announcements and acquisition relates directly to it.

I do hope seeing you tomorrow, 15:00 at Cinema City.

For those wanting to test Sametime Meeting Room, I’ve created a meeting at the Sametime Demo server, which is available to everyone, after a short registration process.
Just point your browser here and you could follow the presentation as we go along. Unfortunately, no audio/video.. just the slides. The password for the meeting is ‘lotus’.

Lotus Notes is here to stay… 12% Y/Y increase

IBM has released it financial results for 2Q, that exceeded the analysts expectations.
Revenues in 2Q has increased 9% to a level of $23.8B, with gross profit of $2.26B – the 12th consecutive quarter of growth, and the best one since 2001.
NY Times are saying “Profit at IBM Rises 12% on Strength of Its Software”.

Software has a strong impact on the results, with growth in all 5 brands.
“For the WebSphere family of software products, which facilitate customers’ ability to manage a wide variety of business processes using open standards to interconnect applications, data and operating systems, revenues increased 28 percent. Revenues for Information Management software, which enables clients to leverage information on demand, increased 21 percent. Revenues from Tivoli software, infrastructure software that enables clients to centrally manage networks including security and storage capability, increased 33 percent, and revenues for Lotus software, which allows collaborating and messaging by clients in real-time communication and knowledge management, increased 12 percent year over year. Revenues from Rational software, integrated tools to improve the processes of software development, increased 11 percent compared with the year-ago quarter.”

It’s good to know that Lotus brand had, and still has, a strong contribution to the results. I hear customers asking me about the future of Lotus, and will it still be there in couple of years.
I think recent results speak for themselves.
