Lotusphere 2009 Session Abstracts Published

The Lotusphere team has updated the website with full sessions’ abstracts. The lectures in each session are also available. Customers have been asking me about Lotusphere since Sep., wanting to know the details, planned announcements, parties, best practices session, workshops, etc. I’m told that registration is beyond expectation, already exceeding last year’s figures.. Hurry up and secure your spot at the largest Lotus and WebSphere Portal event.
See you all in Orlando, January 18th !

I know of at least one party, that will be celebrated throughout the US during Lotusphere…

IBM/Lotus Enterprise Collaboration and Social Software Event – Summary

Took some time to relax from the busy week we had, and ponder about some of the meetings, and now I’m ready to tell you how was the event.

We had over 80 social software advocates attending the event last Thursday (March 20th) – a pretty good attendance. 35% of participants were not IBM/Lotus customers, which shows the growing interest in Israel around social networking solutions.

Alan Lepofsky is great!! Really. Excellent speaker. The feedback from the audience was superb, and even thou his presentation was 30min longer, no one cared. He even got ‘a compliment’ from a customer in a follow-up meeting, but I’ll leave it to him to tell the story. I heard this subject (Collaboration) presented many times before, but Alan provided a new take on the subject, giving customers examples from his numerous customer visits around the globe.

Arjan Radder took the stage after Alan and talked about social networking in the public life and its corporate implications. Most of his time he didn’t mention IBM solutions, which was very unique, but good at the same time – we’re not talking in logos or solutions but in context. The goal is to provide a platform for the business, whilst allowing the employee to keep using his known applications – but in the context of collaboration. For instance – on my Lotus Notes 8.0.1 client I have a Twitter extension, which allows me to update my Twitter status (along with other IBM internal communities) right from my messaging application.

Inbal Ronen from HRL showed us some cool stuff being developed at the labs. Most of the projects are being used internally at IBM, and some may find their way to future releases of Lotus Connections and/or Lotus Quickr and/or Lotus XXX… Stay tuned.

Alex and I then went on stage to show Lotus Collaboration demo. We had a script all planned out, but then Alex had to step outside and I was left to do the demo alone… np. I showed how to work with a messaging platform that provides email/calendar/address-book capabilities, add extensions, plugins and right-click actions , integrate with the corporate instant messaging application, paste a file into a chat/email from my shared online space, lookup contact in the employee directory, read my RSS feeds and open Office documents – all without having to leave my messaging application. Using the corporate social software solution I could search for help based on tags and keywords, learn about a colleague’s experience and expertise, read his/her blog, subscribe to the webpages she reads (bookmarks) and join the communities he/she are part of. There are some videos over at YouTube that will make this last paragraph much clearer.

Last but not least, Jason Risley came up, to wrap this event with WebSphere Portal overview.
I’ve seen couple of his slides before, but I never heard the full story behind Swift Transportation and their super-cool intranet site. I’m not sure if I can post screenshots here, so I won’t, but trust me – it’s like a live comics, really… amazing!! So simple, and so smart.

Facebook contribution:
As the event focused on social software for the enterprise, I thought it would be fitting to open up an event page on facebook and invite my friends, that would invite their friends, and their friends, and so on. What was facebook contribution to the audience tally? depends how you define ‘contribution’. 23 people RSVPed the event, 13 actually came. However, I did get many ‘messages’ from friends asking “what’s this laptop party all about?” So there was some contribution… I’ll definitely use facebook again, as its reach is far beyond the usual corporate distribution lists – facebook is the home of social software advocates, the people working at businesses who are looking for similar corporate tools, behind the firewall.
Facebook and other social networks are the medium to reach that audience.

Pictures from the event can be seen at my flick account. The presentations will be available at the event website, ibm.com/il/news/events/collaboration (will update when it’s ready), along with links to Lotus demos on YouTube. My slideshare space has more stuff you’ll probably be interested in.

To wrap this long summary, personal feedback, to improve and preserve (accordingly):

  • Time – we were late on the agenda by 20min, which is pretty normal in Israel, but still not an excuse. We started late, but made up for lost time during the presentations.
  • Focus on demo – presentations are very good to convey a message, but if you want to engage the audience, demo is the best method. We did 2 live demos, one from HRL and the other by Alex and myself, which got great reviews in the feedback form.

If you attended the event or have other comments, I’d appreciate your feedback.

The future of collaboration from IBM Research

Lotus Enterprise Collaboration and Social Software Event (a.k.a LCTY Israel) is a day away, and today we (Alan Lepofsky, Jason Risley and Arjan Radder) are visiting IBM Haifa Research Labs, hearing what’s in store for social software and collaboration tools. Our agenda here is packed with presentations and we’re behind by 20min so far – too many questions…

Tomorrow we’re gonna talk about how you can start implementing social software tools specifically developed for enterprises, and today we’re hearing about the future: social networking, software, web 2.0 aggregated search, people search, WS Portal search, visualization, plugins, widgets, Quickr ‘Next’, Connections ‘Next’ – very exciting stuff! I can’t elaborate obviously, and trying to put what I’m seeing into words is not easy as well…

The people at IBM Research are working on some innovative projects, and I’m very excited to see the outcome of some of these projects.. I think you’ll be interested as well… 😉

Lotusphere, SWG Community Day and more

It’s hard to talk about anything these days other then Lotusphere happening right now in Orlando. Some of us (such as yours truly) couldn’t attend, but we have enough blogs/flickr/twitter/announcements to follow as it is. In my opinion that’s the true power of the web and collaboration for that matter – getting the feel of Lotusphere, the excitement, without actually being there in person. And I haven’t started talking about Lotusphere in Secondlife
Anyhow, things are happening other than Lotusphere which are worth mentioning, but I must link to a Lotusphere post I saw over at Rob Novak – Lotusphere 2008 Keynote Bingo (see above). Cool!

Now, to other news.
Software Group Community Day – Feb 18th 2008, Israel
Similar to the September 2007 event, the coming SWG Community Day (half-day actually) would provides a glimpse of IBM Software solutions: Information Management, Tivoli, WebSphere, Rational and Lotus (including WebSphere Portal). We’ll meet at Cinema City (again) at 3pm, 2.5 hours of professional sessions and then a movie (popcorn on us), The Kite Runner. The Lotus session will include 2 presentations: the first on a new dashboard software from IBM, SaaS (Software as a Service) based, called Sonata; the second is not final yet, but will focus on messaging and collaboration using mobile devices. Participation is free, but registration is required (phone only for now). Mark your calendars, Monday, Feb. 18th at 3pm.

Lotus Quickr Blog: Lotus Quickr Content Integrator announced

Last but certainly not least is this short movie about my dear friend and colleague, Lotusphere Evangelists and ‘producer’, Ed Brill. Everyone wants to be Ed…

Lotusphere 2008 Announcements

There’s been plenty of info on Lotusphere 2008 and I’m not sure where to begin.
First, to consolidate the info, Ed Brill and Alan Lepofsky are doing an excellent work of covering Lotusphere with as much live-blogging as they can, day-by-day. You can also view Flickr for recent Lotusphere 2008 photos, or subscribe to twitter/lotusphere.
So, in the name of order and convergence, some quick announcements.

IBM and SAP announce ‘Atlantic’: Currently planned for inclusion in the first release of project “Atlantic” is support for SAP workflows, reporting and analytics, and the use of roles from within the Lotus Notes client. In addition, tools are planned to be included to provide the ability to extend and adapt these roles and capabilities, as well as leverage additional collaborative and offline capabilities inherent in Lotus Notes and Domino products. The initial release is planned to ship in the fourth quarter of 2008 and will be sold by both companies.

Lotus Foundations: Lotus Foundations is a new family of offerings targeted for the 5 to 500 user market. The Foundations family will deliver a series of servers. First, a Collaboration server that will include the Domino mail and collaboration platform, file management, directory services, firewall, back-up and recovery, and office productivity tools. Lotus Foundations is the first result of IBM’s recent acquisition of Net Integration Technologies.

Lotus Protector: Lotus Protector for Mail Security is a “black box” (hardware/software combo or software-only VMWare image) pre-processor for anti-spam and anti-virus. Protector was developed in conjunction with IBM Internet Security Solutions.

Lotus ‘BlueHouse’ – collaboration tools open to everyone: an integrated suite of collaboration services including Social Contacts, Instant Messaging, Store and Share, Activities and Web conferencing (based on the existing Sametime Unyte technology)delivered as a service. “Bluehouse” expands on IBM’s introduction of Sametime Unyte, a hosted e-meetings service, which is now incorporated into the “Bluehouse” environment. “Bluehouse” is now in beta at bluehouse.lotus.com and will be available in the second half of 2008.

Lotus Notes Traveler: Traveler provides automatic real-time replication of email including attachments, read and unread indicators, calendar, contacts, personal journal and the to do list. The user interface works with the existing email and Personal Information Manager (PIM) applications on mobile devices running the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 or 6 platform available from a variety of device manufacturers.

Lotus previews Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5: In the area of the Notes client, Notes 8.5 will focus on incremental improvements on top of the best-in-class Notes 8 release. These include calendaring, integration, and usability improvements. We also will ship Notes 8 clients for Apple Macintosh (supported on the “Leopard” OS) and add Ubuntu to the list of supported Linux distributions. Domino Web Access will in 8.5 will also expand to support Safari as a browser, including on the Apple iPhone. From an administrator perspective, Domino 8.5 will simplify Notes Identity management and authentication. We are making ID files optional, as well as offering a way to secure Notes IDs with the ID Vault. We are federating the Domino directory, enabling use of alternative directories. To help address storage costs, Domino 8.5 will introduce a shared attachment data store and other storage reduction features.
