Nokia N97 Unboxing

Nokia Israel kicked off a unique campaign this week, dubbed The Nokia N97 Unboxing – Online as it happens. During the game, Nokia Israel reps are visiting prominent bloggers bearing a box, that might house the new powerhouse from Nokia. The initiative, in cooperation with Y&R, joins this list (also in Hebrew) of digital marketing campaigns, and is quite welcome I might add.

True to the theme of Online as it happens, each visit is broadcasted live and can be viewed at any time on the site, along with a Google Map widget to show you where the package was last. There are also photos from each visit shared on OVI, for your pleasure. If the N97 is not at the box, the blogger is then asked to pick a name from the list I mentioned earlier – the next candidate who’ll recieve a visit from Nokia Israel folks. Each visit is broadcasted, and publicized by both the blogger and Nokia Israel in the various social media sites. The social features could have been better, focusing on (and showing) more content published by those prominent bloggers, but I guess you can’t have all at once.

Although my name is on that list (it’s a short list.. 😉 I’m still waiting for my surprise visit, all dressed up and ready for my close-up.. In the meantime, check out Ilan Peer unboxing his Nokia N97 box:

Mizbala made the shortlist at Cannes!!!

When ever someone wins something around the world, we (Israelies) are always looking for the Jewish angle, no matter how narrow that angle might be.

Today, there’s no need for that.
Mizbala, a guerrilla marketing agency in Israel, has made it to the short list at Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival !!!

In fact, they made it twice! The first is for this awesome promo campaign for Christina Aguilera’s new perfume, with the coat hangers spread across cities in Israel. The second is part of The Young Lions Film Competition, in cooperation with YouTube, in which contestants were requested to create a video to stop global warming (brief). The winners will be part of YouTube team at the competition.

These companies ‘get’ social media. Does yours?

Kerry Capell has written an interesting post over at businessweek.com providing an excellent case study for the usage of social media services in companies’ marketing strategy. In her post, Building European Brands through Social Media, Kerry is giving examples of some European brands – Cadbury, Vodafone, Unilever, Nestle and Volkswagen – and their innovative ideas of connecting the customers to the product and making conversation.

The concept of leveraging social (or new) media to reinvent the way companies engage with their customers isn’t new, but it’s always refreshing reading the new ideas and then looking in-house, at your company, and exploring what’s possible. In tough economical times, getting ad money isn’t easy (not to mention budget cuts), and social media campaigns are much cheaper, more effective (at times) and make a lot of noise.

Clay Shirky said in his recent TED lecture that twitter is making history and that the internet is changing the way people communicate and collaborate – “When a new consumer joins the conversation, a new producer joins as well”. The examples Kerry brings forth are a strong testimony to the power of social media and I hope Israeli companies will soon follow in those foot steps. I for one, will definitely do my best to make it a reality, soon.
