40% Y/Y growth for Enterprise 2.0 market

According to a Wainhouse Research study, recently released, the Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) market will reach $2B by 2013, with a projected 40% growth Y/Y.
The study, The Enterprise Social Networking Landscape, Volume 1: Market Dynamics, Sizing and Forecast, states that the ESN market is still in its infancy stages, reaching ‘only’ $200m.

Wainhouse Research conclusion (emphasis by me):

Social Networking in enterprise is inevitable. This conclusion is based on the benefits enterprise could achieve from using social networking technology and tracking historical adoption patterns of similar technologies.

This study is a complement report to IBM’s Strategy for Taking Social Networking to the Enterprise: An Inside Look at Lotus Connections report, released earlier this year.

In Israel, the market is still trying to understand what enterprise 2.0 is all about, and how they can harness those solutions to generate revenue. Probably the local ESN growth rate will not be 40% in 2009, but I’m positive Israel will discover enterprise 2.0 in the first half of 2009. We have excellent partners already working with a limited number of customers on adopting such solutions, building the business cases and best practices.
Wanna be an early adopter of enterprise 2.0? Now is the time to do so.

Adopt enterprise 2.0 – I want a facebook thing. I think.

I want a facebook thing. I think

Just wrapped up my presentation at KM Annual Conference (another one), where I got 20min (but took 30) to talk about Enterprise 2.0, or ‘I want a facebook thing. I think‘.
The event was more about traditional knowledge management (aka – documents), and how to maintain a document library within your internal portal, so my Enterprise 2.0 portion was unique and different. I like to be unique.

I adopted some tips from Ed and Alan and came with Jeans and a buttoned shirt (short sleeves – it’s Israel), instead of my usual dress-code. Being the last speaker before lunch is not easy, especially where you consider who came before me. If you happen to follow me on twitter, you know I was up with some fierce competition, as all the speakers before me, and sponsors outside, were MOSS/WSS/Sharepoint integrators. One hilarious moment came when a presenter took the stage to demo a solution over Powerpoint 2007 – but the main hall laptop had Office XP.. :-)) The laptop refused to open the Office 2007 file. LOL

The important thing, I ROCKED !!
And mentioned how IBM beat Sharepoint in Enterprise 2.0 face-off earlier this week.
And gathered some business cards for future opportunities.
I talked about social computing in general (what is facebook), then dived into Lotus Connections (I want something like this…) with references from Ernest & Young and Sprint, and finished with three first steps for piloting/adopting (COOL!! How to get started?).
With little time to spare I didn’t talked about the barriers to adoption, but Enterprise 2.0 Conference already covered this in one of their discussions.

The facebook test

Met with another government agency today, to discuss about social software for the enterprise, or Enterprise 2.0. As I mentioned before there’s a hugh difference between Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0, and implementing social software solutions within the firewall is not that common. Yet.

The meeting was actually a lead from the KM Summit I lectured a month ago, and today I met the KM Manager of that agency. They are a pretty large agency, with couple departments, already using internal portal and other KM tools, so they are quite advanced in that aspect. Still, Enterprise 2.0 is something entirely different.

When we started talking freely about the value and benefits of Enterprise 2.0 I decided to try the facebook test, out of the blue. I didn’t rehearse this before the meeting, it was an ad-hoc attempt, to see how many employees are members of that government agency group on facebook.
We found over 20 different groups, in one of them – 500 members. Impressive.

What did we learn?
First, the demand is out there, people want to share their content and connect online. It’s their way of communicating with the world, and even with their friends.
Second, when lacking the right tools within the firewall, they turn to tools outside the firewall, sharing content that should have stayed inside.
Third, it’s time to seriously consider Enterprise 2.0 tools. And that’s the hard part.
