Lotus Symphony – no more Office for me

New resolution people:

Starting today, I will use only Lotus Symphony for day-to-day word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. I’ve been using Lotus Symphony for some time now, in conjunction with Office, but no more. My goal is to demonstrate it’s possible to un-install MS Office, except for the ‘power’ users – those that require advanced editing features. I will post status reports on my work with Lotus Symphony, the good and the bad. I guess IdeaJam will help me push new ideas forward…

Lotus Symphony is based on Open Office suite, totally free of charge, and supports multiple languages – including Hebrew of course.
Lotus Symphony is Eclipse based, so you can add plugins and even develop your own, with the toolkit. Individuals and businesses will love the ability to export documents to PDF, straight from the box.

Coming Monday, the 18th, at SWG Community Day, I will demonstrate the full Lotus Collaboration Suite – Notes/Domino 8, with Lotus Sametime (VoIP enabled), Lotus Connections, Lotus Quickr and Lotus Symphony. Look out for the live demo at the networking area, between 14:30-15:30. My colleague, Alex, will show you how collaboration is done at IBM. How we utilize Lotus collaboration tools to >350,000 employees. How many IMs (chats) are handled a day? What people blog about? What communities they join? What web-pages they view (internal/external)? In short, it’s gonna be exciting…

Feb. 12 – Safe Internet Day

Heads-up: Hebrew links coming up…

Today, Feb. 12, is the Safe Internet Day in Israel. The initiative from the Ministry of Education, along with several businesses and organizations, strives at teaching how to practice ‘safe internet’, particularly for children, who are most susceptible to the dangers of the web.
Recent technological advances have created 2 conflicting trends: 1) the internet is more accessible; 2) anonymity thrives.

Most of the people I know are contributors now, UGC providers. They blog, comment, talkback, respond, speak – everyone has something to say. You can comment in good taste or not in good taste – it depends solely on your personality. I will never talk down or insult someone on the web, no matter what he/she wrote, either on their own or as a comment.

If you know Hebrew, you’re welcome to the ‘To the Surfers’ Knowledge’ website (free translation). It’s the website of the 45-min show aired today, covering many aspects of how to practice ‘safe internet’, and what dangers lay inside the web – phishing, talkbacks (Israelies are talkbacking more than 55,000 times a day!! I had no idea), guerrilla marketing, and much more. At the Safe Internet Day website there are more links for your benefit.

I really liked this clip of Uri Gotliv, a stand-up artist hosting a late-night show in Israel. After the first episodes, some nasty comments started to surface on the show’s forum, news reviews, blogs, etc. Uri decided to fight back. Here’s the result:

5min with FuxyTunes and Mudo

There have been several announcements recently regarding Israeli hi-tech companies – either bought by large corporations or introduced what could be the next big thing in the business. Respect.

The first time I heard about 5min.com was over at Ouriel’s blog, when the company was chosen (along with 14 other) to travel to California for IsraelWebTour. I thought it’s a nice concept, making a 5min tutorial videos, but the only differentiator between YouTube for instance is that 5min.com are limiting the content in terms of time (5min max) and type (tutorial). My opinion still stands, and I guess only time will tell if I’m right or wrong. I hope I’m wrong.

On related news, Yahoo! announced earlier this week they are buying Israeli company FoxyTunes.com, which lets you control almost any media player and find lyrics, covers, videos, bios and much more with a click right from your browser. Again, Respect! I think FoxyTunes was the first extension in my Firefox – had no idea (at the time) it was an Israeli company…

Last but not least, is ModuMobile.com, from M-Systems founder Dov Moran. The company is said to introduce the next big thing in the world of mobile devices. And the short video they released to the web (excellent viral marketing example) didn’t shed more light on the mystery. Now I’m reading they will introduce their mobile solution in October 2008 – a mobile device that takes your personality where ever you go – laptop at work, mp3 in the car, GPS, media system at home, etc. Interesting.

These are only 3 examples of Israeli innovation. No wonder IBM Corporation decided to open up the Global Technology Unit (GTU) in Israel at 2001 – a corporate initiative to promote world wide business for IBM with Israeli-based technology companies. Not to mention the numerous Software and Storage acquisitions IBM made in Israel – XIV being the last one – and the excellent work IBM Haifa Research Lab are doing, both locally and worldwide.

Lotusphere, SWG Community Day and more

It’s hard to talk about anything these days other then Lotusphere happening right now in Orlando. Some of us (such as yours truly) couldn’t attend, but we have enough blogs/flickr/twitter/announcements to follow as it is. In my opinion that’s the true power of the web and collaboration for that matter – getting the feel of Lotusphere, the excitement, without actually being there in person. And I haven’t started talking about Lotusphere in Secondlife
Anyhow, things are happening other than Lotusphere which are worth mentioning, but I must link to a Lotusphere post I saw over at Rob Novak – Lotusphere 2008 Keynote Bingo (see above). Cool!

Now, to other news.
Software Group Community Day – Feb 18th 2008, Israel
Similar to the September 2007 event, the coming SWG Community Day (half-day actually) would provides a glimpse of IBM Software solutions: Information Management, Tivoli, WebSphere, Rational and Lotus (including WebSphere Portal). We’ll meet at Cinema City (again) at 3pm, 2.5 hours of professional sessions and then a movie (popcorn on us), The Kite Runner. The Lotus session will include 2 presentations: the first on a new dashboard software from IBM, SaaS (Software as a Service) based, called Sonata; the second is not final yet, but will focus on messaging and collaboration using mobile devices. Participation is free, but registration is required (phone only for now). Mark your calendars, Monday, Feb. 18th at 3pm.

Lotus Quickr Blog: Lotus Quickr Content Integrator announced

Last but certainly not least is this short movie about my dear friend and colleague, Lotusphere Evangelists and ‘producer’, Ed Brill. Everyone wants to be Ed…

Lotusphere 2008 Announcements

There’s been plenty of info on Lotusphere 2008 and I’m not sure where to begin.
First, to consolidate the info, Ed Brill and Alan Lepofsky are doing an excellent work of covering Lotusphere with as much live-blogging as they can, day-by-day. You can also view Flickr for recent Lotusphere 2008 photos, or subscribe to twitter/lotusphere.
So, in the name of order and convergence, some quick announcements.

IBM and SAP announce ‘Atlantic’: Currently planned for inclusion in the first release of project “Atlantic” is support for SAP workflows, reporting and analytics, and the use of roles from within the Lotus Notes client. In addition, tools are planned to be included to provide the ability to extend and adapt these roles and capabilities, as well as leverage additional collaborative and offline capabilities inherent in Lotus Notes and Domino products. The initial release is planned to ship in the fourth quarter of 2008 and will be sold by both companies.

Lotus Foundations: Lotus Foundations is a new family of offerings targeted for the 5 to 500 user market. The Foundations family will deliver a series of servers. First, a Collaboration server that will include the Domino mail and collaboration platform, file management, directory services, firewall, back-up and recovery, and office productivity tools. Lotus Foundations is the first result of IBM’s recent acquisition of Net Integration Technologies.

Lotus Protector: Lotus Protector for Mail Security is a “black box” (hardware/software combo or software-only VMWare image) pre-processor for anti-spam and anti-virus. Protector was developed in conjunction with IBM Internet Security Solutions.

Lotus ‘BlueHouse’ – collaboration tools open to everyone: an integrated suite of collaboration services including Social Contacts, Instant Messaging, Store and Share, Activities and Web conferencing (based on the existing Sametime Unyte technology)delivered as a service. “Bluehouse” expands on IBM’s introduction of Sametime Unyte, a hosted e-meetings service, which is now incorporated into the “Bluehouse” environment. “Bluehouse” is now in beta at bluehouse.lotus.com and will be available in the second half of 2008.

Lotus Notes Traveler: Traveler provides automatic real-time replication of email including attachments, read and unread indicators, calendar, contacts, personal journal and the to do list. The user interface works with the existing email and Personal Information Manager (PIM) applications on mobile devices running the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 or 6 platform available from a variety of device manufacturers.

Lotus previews Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5: In the area of the Notes client, Notes 8.5 will focus on incremental improvements on top of the best-in-class Notes 8 release. These include calendaring, integration, and usability improvements. We also will ship Notes 8 clients for Apple Macintosh (supported on the “Leopard” OS) and add Ubuntu to the list of supported Linux distributions. Domino Web Access will in 8.5 will also expand to support Safari as a browser, including on the Apple iPhone. From an administrator perspective, Domino 8.5 will simplify Notes Identity management and authentication. We are making ID files optional, as well as offering a way to secure Notes IDs with the ID Vault. We are federating the Domino directory, enabling use of alternative directories. To help address storage costs, Domino 8.5 will introduce a shared attachment data store and other storage reduction features.
